Derby Arboretum:
Grade II*

This urban park is of great historical importance. Designed
by the nineteenth century horticulturist John Claudius
Loudon, it was opened in 1840. As such, it has claims to be
the first public park created in England.
Recognising its
great heritage merit, Derby City Council commissioned Mary
Anderson & John Glenn to head a team of consultants to
prepare a management and restoration plan for the site. This
work, carried out between 1996 and 1998, included an
historical and arboricultural appraisal of the park, and a
community survey. Detailed plans and extensive written
specifications of the proposed restoration were prepared by
the practice and the projected costs for the scheme were
produced by Quantity Surveyors, Thompson's of Peterborough.
All of this work formed part of a successful submission to
the Heritage Lottery Fund, by Derby City Council.
We are pleased
to have initiated this project and provided a sound
professional basis on which the restoration and
regeneration of this park has been carried forward.
