Moulton Mill: Grade I

Burgess, c. 1830.

This is the tallest brick tower mill in the country and was built
between 1824-1826. Due to its imposing height it
makes an important contribution to the centre of the historic
village of Moulton in Lincolnshire. Its sails were lost in a gale in
the 1890s, but it
retained all of its original machinery and the millers office
remains to this day, in a
remarkable state of preservation.

A conservation plan and a detailed schedule of architectural repairs
and alterations were prepared by Anderson & Glenn. These documents
formed an important part of an application for English Heritage and
Heritage Lottery Fund grant aid. Substantial funding was awarded
to the project, by both bodies, and the restoration work was
finished in 2005.

The Anderson & Glenn design work included restoration of the brick
tower and provision of suitable access for the disabled and a
tea-room, kitchen and exhibition room in the former granary. This facility is
open on a regular basis and it is an important part of the visitor
experience.
When additional funds become available, new sails and a replacement
gallery will be fitted.
