Mrs Smith's Cottage: Grade II

This small cottage was the
home of Mrs Smith a resident of the village of Navenby near
Lincoln. She had lived there until her death aged 102 years. It is
a fascinating time-capsule, reflecting as it does a way of life that
has all but disappeared. The facilities are of a very basic nature
and access to the bedrooms is by ladders placed in rooms at either
end of the building. As this was such an unusual surviving example
of social archaeology, it was decided that the house and its
contents should be conserved for present and future generations to
enjoy. As the building had many structural problems, Anderson and
Glenn were commissioned by North Kesteven District Council to
prepare a restoration strategy for the fabric of the building. Now
after the completion of a very successful project, partly funded by
the HLF, the cottage is open to the public as a Museum and Heritage
Centre.
